UK ETA Eligibility Requirements

Eligibility Criteria for a UK ETA Application

The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) allows citizens of selected countries to visit the United Kingdom for short stays without needing a traditional visa. It is only available to travellers from nations that have been officially approved by UK immigration authorities.

To qualify for a UK ETA, you must hold a passport from an eligible country. Your visit must be for an approved short-term purpose, and you must not have any current UK immigration bans or restrictions. Please note that an ETA is not a visa and cannot be used if your nationality requires a full visa.

It is very important to confirm you meet all eligibility requirements before submitting your application. Applying when you are not eligible may lead to a refusal, which could make future UK travel requests more difficult. We strongly advise you to carefully review all the conditions below before you begin.

Passport Requirements

Your passport must be machine-readable and contain a digital chip for electronic verification
The passport must remain valid for the entire duration of your planned stay in the United Kingdom
Damaged, defaced, or illegible passports will not be accepted for ETA processing
The name on your ETA application must match your passport details exactly, including any middle names
If you have recently renewed your passport, ensure you use the new document's details for your application

Approved Travel Purposes

The UK ETA authorises entry for the following categories of travel. Your stated purpose of visit must align with one of these approved categories:

Tourism & Leisure

Visiting historical sites, attending cultural events, recreational travel, and general sightseeing throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

Business Engagements

Participating in business meetings, conferences, trade exhibitions, contract negotiations, and professional development activities that do not constitute employment.

Personal Visits

Visiting family members, friends, or personal contacts who are established residents or citizens of the United Kingdom.

Transit Travel

Passing through UK airports or seaports as part of an onward journey to another country, including layovers and connecting flights.

Conditions That May Affect Eligibility

Previous visa refusals or immigration violations in the UK or other countries
Outstanding criminal convictions or pending legal proceedings
Previous deportation or removal from any country
Overstaying a previous visit to the United Kingdom
Providing false or misleading information in prior applications
